Recycling<\/h2>\n

This year Recycling<\/a> hosted several sustainable gardening workshops. These workshops are free and open to the community.<\/p>\n

CAB Care Expo<\/h2>\n

CAB\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0annual CARE Expo was attended by about 400 students and brought a wide spectrum of local and national non-profit organizations and support services to Corwin Pavilion. Nearly 50 organizations provided information about volunteer opportunities, internships, and employment serving the community.<\/p>\n

Relay for Life<\/h2>\n

Several A.S. groups including,\u00a0participated in the annual\u00a0Relay for Life<\/a>\u00a0to raise awareness and money for cancer research. The event also celebrates the lives of cancer victims and survivors and the family members and friends who support them.<\/p>\n

Port Huron at 50 Conference<\/strong><\/h2>\n

A.S. was a sponsor of the Port Huron Statement<\/a> at 50 conference, which was co-sponsored by\u00a0Dissent<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0The Nation<\/a><\/em>, the Dick Flacks Democracy Fund<\/a>, the Center for the Study of Work, Labor, and Democracy<\/a>, and the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center\u2019s\u00a0<\/a>Public Goods<\/em>\u00a0series.<\/p>\n

The keynote speakers were\u00a0Michael Kazin<\/a> (History, Georgetown University) and\u00a0Tom Hayden<\/a> (principal author of the Port Huron Statement, political activist and former California State Senator and Assembly member)<\/p>\n

A.S. President Harrison Weber also addressed the Corwin Pavilion audience.<\/p>\n

The 1962 Port Huron Statement was the most important manifesto of the early New Left. The conference brought together a wide range of scholars and Port Huron veterans and generated a conversation that evaluated what is living, dead, and irrelevant in a document that has become a flashpoint for debates over the legacy of \u201cThe Sixties.\u201d The idea of \u201cparticipatory democracy\u201d first popularized in the statement, was among the key ideas and practices to face a twenty-first century reevaluation. Likewise, the dialectical relationship between liberalism and its presumptively radical antagonists remains a subject of much contestation, then and now.<\/p>\n

Green Chef Competition<\/h2>\n

Environmental Affairs Board<\/a>\u00a0(EAB) hosted a fantastic Green Chef cooking contest. The competition featured a wide variety of dishes, local bands and a guest speaker. The event educated students about sustainable food and provided recipes that they can try at home.<\/p>\n

PARDALL CARNIVAL<\/h2>\n

Sponsored by the\u00a0Community Affairs Board<\/a>\u00a0(CAB) and\u00a0Isla Vista Community Relations Committee<\/a>\u00a0(IVCRC) Pardall Carnival once again bridged the gap between students and the families that make up the IV community. It included carnival rides, games, and other entertainment. Student groups tabled to provide information about their activities.<\/p>\n

Legal Resource Center Services<\/h2>\n

Attorneys at the A.S. Legal Resource Center<\/a> provide free legal advice to students. Common issues include, landlord and roommate disputes, alcohol related violations, and questions surrounding the newly implemented social host ordinance. The Center does not address university related matters. The A.S. Student Advocate<\/a> addresses university related cases.<\/p>\n

SIRCC GUIDES Program<\/h2>\n

The Student Initiated Recruitment and Retention Committee (SIRCC) implemented theGUIDES<\/a>\u00a0(Guiding Undergraduates In Developing Educational Success) mentorship program. The program provides mentors and tutors for first year undergraduates and high school students at San Marcos High School.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Campus-wide Elections<\/h2>\n

The\u00a0A.S. Elections Committee<\/a>\u00a0organizes campus elections including the production of all elections materials, candidate orientations, candidate debates, election day monitoring, and announcement of the winners. The result was a turnout of over 40% of students, which is among the highest in the UC system. Sophia Armen was elected A.S. President.<\/p>\n
