A.S. Awards Ceremony<\/p><\/div>\n

In its second year of operation, the Human Rights Board<\/a> was active on a variety of fronts as part of members\u2019 efforts to educate the public about the range of human rights issues locally, nationally, and internationally. The larger aim is to encourage people to take action themselves to address these issues.<\/p>\n

Peace in the Park Rally<\/h2>\n

In fall quarter the board enlisted students faculty, community members for a \u201cPeace In the Park demonstration in Isla Vista\u2019s People\u2019s Park.<\/p>\n

The rally featured musical performances, including one from UCSB\u2019s\u00a0 all-female a cappella<\/em> vocal group Vocal Motion<\/a>, local artwork, and teach-ins with Global and International Studies<\/a> professor Paul Amar<\/a> and Department of Asian American Studies<\/a> professor Diane Fujino<\/a>, who discussed topics including student protests and UC tuition increases.\u00a0Several workshops covered a variety of human rights topics, such as \u201cFeminism in the Work Place,\u201d \u201cThe Corporatization of Isla Vista,\u201d \u201cHistory of Black Activism at UCSB\u201d and \u201cThe Crisis in the Horn of Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n
