A.S. on You Tube<\/h2>\n
Did you know that A.S. has a You Tube channel that you can access by clicking here<\/a>. A.S. will be video documenting more and more events in the upcoming years.<\/p>\n During Fall Quarter 2012\u00a0two students, KCSB News Director Bianca Beltran and The Bottom Line Executive Managing Editor Annalise Domenighini, traveled to Tampa, Florida and Charlotte, North Carolina to provide remote news coverage of the Republican and Democrat National Conventions. They were supported by Associated Students staff members, KSCB and The Bottom Line News Advisor Monica Lopez and Community Education Outreach Coordinator Allina Mojarro.<\/p>\n Campus radio KCSB 91.9 FM<\/a> once again participated in the UCSB Reads<\/a> program by reading the selected book, Moonwalking with Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything<\/em>\u00a0by Joshua Foer<\/a>, on the air.<\/p>\n A.S. also provided a significant funding to make copies of the book available to students for free. The program, which is now in its seventh year, is a collaboration between Davidson Library<\/a> and the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor Gene Lucas<\/a>. The program includes distribution of 2000 free copies of the book to students and is designed to encourage discussion among students, faculty and staff.<\/p>\n Writing in the Independent’s Eye on IV<\/a> column, Cat Neushul praised The Bottom Line for their investigative reporting and willingness to bring new perspectives to important issues. In addition, The Bottom Line’s Managing Executive Director Annalise Domenghinini wrote several articles for the Independent<\/a> as an intern for the local weekly. Kelsey Gripenstraw served as an intern with local web news consolidator Noozhawk<\/a>.<\/p>\n Each Winter Quarter the\u00a0Community Affairs Board<\/a>\u00a0(CAB) hosts the Care Expo in Corwin Pavilion. The event invites local and national non-profit organizations to provide information for students. It is both a career fair for work in the non-profit sector and a way for student to find out about volunteer opportunities. Ultimately, it’s about encouraging community service as a lifelong practice.<\/p>\n Executive Director Marisela M\u00e1rquez<\/a>\u00a0and the management team invited\u00a0Fund for Santa Barbara<\/a>\u00a0Executive Director and former A.S. President, Geoff Green to conduct a workshop in fundraising basics. Students were alerted to the fact that, \u00a0“Fundraising \u2013 whether you love it, hate it, want to be better at it, or never thought about it \u2013 sooner or later you\u2019ll be asked to do it.” The workshop covered “fundraising styles, strategies, economics, politics, models, and more.”<\/p>\n As a fitting end to a year of serving the IV community, several A.S. groups, including CAB and CAB Foundation, IVCRC, Business Services Committee, Finance Board, and IVTU, participated in the annual IV GIVE drive.<\/p>\n The event, which is also sponsored by GIVE Isla Vista, Housing & Residential Services, Office of Student Life, Marborg Disposal, Inc., Goodwill Industries, and The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF), is the culmination of a week of collecting items ranging from furniture to non-perishable foods from students moving out at the end of the year. These items are sold and all proceeds benefit local community service agencies.<\/p>\n Items left over from the sale are donated to local thrift stores. \u00a0The food goes to stock the shelves of the A.S. Food Bank. This year GIVE raised $37,260.24.\u00a0138 volunteers worked 1,314.5 hours collecting about 30 tons of student donations.
