Womyn&#8217;s Commission is an educator about and an advocate for womyn&#8217;s rights, with a commitment to representing and improving the status of womyn on campus and in the community. The A.S. Womyn&#8217;s Commission constantly redefines itself to actively try to recognize how womyn&#8217;s issues function within the intersections of race, class, age, sexual orientation, religion, culture and physical ability. Recognizing this means that members of the committee acknowledge that one group can never represent the voices of all womyn across these intersections. Therefore, the members look beyond the Womyn&#8217;s Commission and into the campus and community.<\/div>\n<h2>Human Rights Week<\/h2>\n<p>Throughout this year&#8217;s Human Rights Week, Womyn\u2019s Commission members expressed activism through art. Everyone was welcome to participate and express their creativity throughout the week in locations including the Arbor, SRB Lawn, and in front of the UCEN.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3268\" alt=\"2013-02-12_14-04-22_951 - Version 2\" src=\"https:\/\/flashback.as.ucsb.edu\/2012-13\/files\/2011\/05\/2013-02-12_14-04-22_951-Version-2.jpg\" width=\"1430\" height=\"1283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flashback.as.ucsb.edu\/2012-13\/files\/2011\/05\/2013-02-12_14-04-22_951-Version-2.jpg 1430w, https:\/\/flashback.as.ucsb.edu\/2012-13\/files\/2011\/05\/2013-02-12_14-04-22_951-Version-2-300x269.jpg 300w, https:\/\/flashback.as.ucsb.edu\/2012-13\/files\/2011\/05\/2013-02-12_14-04-22_951-Version-2-1024x918.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/flashback.as.ucsb.edu\/2012-13\/files\/2011\/05\/2013-02-12_14-04-22_951-Version-2-700x628.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1430px) 100vw, 1430px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Sandra Fluke Speaks<\/h2>\n<p>In partnership with the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.soc.ucsb.edu\">UCSB Departments of Sociology<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.femst.ucsb.edu\">Feminist Studies<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/103935693005693\/?fref=ts\">Take Back the Night<\/a>,\u00a0\u00a0External Vice President, Local Affairs, \u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cab.as.ucsb.edu\">Community Affairs Board<\/a>, Womyn&#8217;s Commission,\u00a0co-sponsored a talk by women&#8217;s rights activist\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sandrafluke.tumblr.com\">Sandra Fluke<\/a>. The The daughter of a conservative Christian pastor, Sandra Fluke, 31, became a women&#8217;s-rights activist in college and continued her advocacy as a law student at\u00a0Georgetown. In February 2012, after being denied a chance to testify at a Republican-run House hearing on insurance coverage for birth control,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rushlimbaugh.com\">Rush Limbaugh<\/a>\u00a0called Fluke a &#8220;slut.&#8221; Democrats and many Republicans reacted with outrage, and the left made Limbaugh&#8217;s slur Exhibit A in what they called a GOP &#8220;war on women.&#8221; Fluke, meanwhile, weathered the attention with poise and maturity and emerged as a political celebrity. In 2012, Democrats turned the national spotlight on Fluke again by giving her a national-convention speaking slot as part of their push to make reproductive rights a central issue in the presidential campaign.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image002\" src=\"https:\/\/flashback.as.ucsb.edu\/2012-13\/files\/2011\/05\/image002.jpg\" width=\"817\" height=\"1057\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sandra Fluke joined the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wgse.sa.ucsb.edu\">Women, Gender, and Sexual Equity Department<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sbwpc.org\">Santa Barbara Women\u2019s Political Committee<\/a>\u00a0for a presentation on\u00a0<b>February 28<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0at 7:30 pm at Campbell Hall\u00a0<\/b>to discuss what\u2019s next in the political war on women and how women of all ages can stay energized and active now that the election is over. The lecture was open to students, faculty, staff and community members.<\/p>\n<h2>Annual Womyn Unite Banquet<i>\u00a0<\/i><\/h2>\n<p>The annual Womyn Unite Banquet is a Winter Quarter event in which campus womyn came together to celebrate the womyn in their communities and in their lives. The banquet, which was held in Corwin Pavilion, included a buffet style, sit down dinner, as well as several performances by various groups on campus. The Commission also proudly presented this year&#8217;s guest speaker, spoken word artist,\u00a0<i>Natasha T. Miller<\/i>. The event was a\u00a0night of friends, community, and empowerment\u00a0open and free to all!<\/p>\n<h2>Womyn of Color Conference<\/h2>\n<p>Womyn&#8217;s Commission proudly presented its First Annual Womyn of Color Conference during \u00a0Spring Quarter. The conference was entitled\u00a0&#8220;Womyn of Resilience:\u00a0Remembering Our Ancestors,\u00a0Reclaiming the Margins,\u00a0Redefining Progress.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The one day conference provided a safe space and a voice to discuss the many issues and obstacles that womyn of color face on our campus, in our communities, and in society.\u00a0The keynote speaker was Cecelia Fire Thunder.\u00a0Guest speakers included UCSB Professors, Kum-Kum Bhavnani and Grace Chang. \u00a0The event also included student performances and food was provided.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The Annual Runaway show, &#8220;I am Beautiful&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>Leading up to the Womyn of Color Conference, Womyn&#8217;s Commission hosted their annual &#8220;I Am Beautiful&#8221; Runway Show. The show was held in Corwin Pavilion to question media hyped notions of beauty and let women and men be chill with their bodies.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Introduction The UCSB A.S.
