It is team- and project-based; \u00a0participants&#8217; goals include helping students define and accomplish their educational goals, and increasing communication among students, faculty, and administration.<\/p>\n<h2>Book Exchanges<\/h2>\n<p>This year working with the A.S. President&#8217;s Office, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/aab.as.ucsb.edu\">Academic Affairs Board<\/a>\u00a0tackled the perennial problem of overpriced textbooks. Responding to this, the\u00a0Textbook Marketplace\u00a0was inaugurated on the A.S. Annex lawn on January 9, 2013.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3413\" alt=\"562640_573760499309718_1446634145_n\" src=\"https:\/\/flashback.as.ucsb.edu\/2012-13\/files\/2011\/05\/562640_573760499309718_1446634145_n.jpg\" width=\"742\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flashback.as.ucsb.edu\/2012-13\/files\/2011\/05\/562640_573760499309718_1446634145_n.jpg 742w, https:\/\/flashback.as.ucsb.edu\/2012-13\/files\/2011\/05\/562640_573760499309718_1446634145_n-231x300.jpg 231w, https:\/\/flashback.as.ucsb.edu\/2012-13\/files\/2011\/05\/562640_573760499309718_1446634145_n-700x905.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 742px) 100vw, 742px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The marketplace was a one day event where students could buy and sell their used textbooks directly to each other. The goal is to provide an alternative to sky high text book prices and cut out the middle man\u2014textbook resale companies and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucsbstuff.com\/home.aspx\">Bookstore<\/a>\u2014that pay relatively little for used titles and then still sell them at prices that are a challenge to many students on a budget, who don&#8217;t want to be burdened with excessive student loan debt when they leave the university.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/flashback.as.ucsb.edu\/2012-13\/fast-facts\/new-programs-initiatives\/_mg_9843\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2802\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"_MG_9843\" src=\"https:\/\/flashback.as.ucsb.edu\/2012-13\/files\/2011\/05\/MG_9843-1024x682.jpg\" width=\"660\" height=\"439\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The exchange is an example of students taking charge of a situation and building a program to respond to an identified need. The goal is for the marketplace to take place quarterly and become part of the beginning-of-quarter routine for students.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"ARW13-Book Buy Back 1\" src=\"https:\/\/flashback.as.ucsb.edu\/2012-13\/files\/2011\/05\/ARW13-Book-Buy-Back-1-1024x682.jpg\" width=\"660\" height=\"439\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Book Exchange returned at the beginning of Spring quarter with more books and a more central location in front of the UCen.
