<\/h1>\n<\/h1>\nBanner created by the AS Creative Media Unit<\/a>!<\/p>\n Fact:\u00a0Did you know that there are over 30,000 bike trips made daily at UC Santa Barbara<\/a>? Here’s what that looks like at just one UCSB roundabout Bike Committee funded and helped design: Click<\/a><\/p>\n The Associated Students\u00a0Bike Committee is a place for\u00a0passionate advocacy for bicycle safety and a clear voice for consideration of bicycles in campus planning. The committee is\u00a0an active bicycle system advocate that works to increase student, staff, faculty, and administration awareness and involvement with bicycle system issues in and around UCSB. It also funds bike improvements on campus, and participates in social and outreach events throughout the year with its $1.25 per student per quarter lock-in fee.<\/p>\n Bike Committee maintains an active web and social media presence. Much of the information that follows has been copied directly from either its website<\/a> or Facebook<\/a>. Many thanks to the students who maintain these sites! For starters here’s a handy bike frame size chart the committee posted on Facebook:<\/p>\n And, how about a map to get you around campus?<\/p>\n Bike Committee is involved with bicycle related projects across campus.\u00a0The student-driven committee has been successful in financing design and construction of ambitious capital improvement projects as well as maintenance projects.<\/p>\n The bike path along Girvetz and Music Buildings are sloped due to roots and have irrigation problems during rainy seasons. The committee is working to repave this path for a smoother, safer ride for everyone. Right now there is construction underneath for plumbing, but after this is complete they plan to initiate our project.<\/p>\n Physical Science Building Due to the confusion many student faced when riding their bike through the intersection, Bike Committee decided to\u00a0redesign the striping to better indicate the yield and turning signs. Installation took place during 2016 winter break. Check out the video here<\/a>.<\/p>\n As many of students know, the struggle\u00a0to find bike parking near the Arbor is real. In the past there have been many measures to better\u00a0the South Hall parking problem\u00a0ranging from CSO enforcement, parking lot detour, a new parking lot behind Kern Hall, and installing signs. Students were often tempted to just park their bike on the north side because it was convenient and they couldn’t see an adjacent parking lot. Bike Committee installed a new parking lot in order to divert the parking from the crowded parking lot near the Arbor. 141 parking spaces were installed during winter break of 2016. The cost was\u00a0$12,134.54 of student fees.<\/p>\n In addition to the NW corner of South Hall, the committee decided to install an additional 144 parking spaces on the west side of South Hall. The cost of this parking lot amounted to\u00a0$17,326.72. Installation took place during 2016 winter break.<\/p>\n Committee members noticed that many bikes were not properly locked in front of the Life Science building due to the half moon shaped racks that are not well suited for bike parking. The committee decided to install new bike racks called Peak Racks<\/a> the densest bike racks locally sourced from San Luis Obispo, CA. The cost was $17,392.72 of student fees. Installation took place during 2016 winter break.<\/p>\n Before with half moon shaped racks ><\/p>\n After with Peak racks ><\/p>\n Before the committee’s intervention, not too many bikes were parked in the interior area of the Psychology North lot, because the racks were half moon shaped. The half moon racks were replace with 118 Peak Rack spaces. The cost was $12,106.95 of student fees. Installation took place during 2016 winter break.<\/p>\n One more time:<\/p>\n Before with half moon shaped racks ><\/p>\n After with Peak racks ><\/p>\n This update was announced during spring quarter.<\/p>\n Bike Committee started the year with the first ever Gaucho Bike Fair. Local bike, including SBBike and the California Highway Patrol shared information on cycling and bike safety. The event was a great success!<\/p>\n Have you ever had your chain fall off and couldn’t put it back on without going to a bike shop? Have you ever had a flat tire and didn’t know what to do? Has your bike ever said “No, I won’t work today.” Bike Committee partnered with the Residence Hall Assistants to offer a bike maintenance clinic so students wouldn’t have to go to a bike shop and pay for all those expensive parts and labor.\u00a0At the end, there was a trivia contest with bike related prizes such as bike lights, Bike Comm t-shirts, fenders, I Bike UCSB Stickers, and more!<\/p>\n A bike tour in search of good healthy food. Great idea!<\/p>\n Each quarter, Bike Committee works with the Campus Police to sell bikes that have been abandoned on campus. Buyers pay just $50 for a bike and registration. And they received free pizza, stickers, helmets, bike lights and a shirt in the bargain! This was also the place to be if you just wanted to get your bike licensed and learn how to keep your bike safe on campus and out of the hands of thieves in the mean streets of IV.<\/p>\n As the year came to a close, Bike Committee encouraged students to donate unwanted bicycles to the annual GIVE Sale, which has been held at the end of the school year since 1990. All proceeds from the sale fund Isla Vista non-profit community service organizations.<\/p>\n (Directly from the Bike Committee Facebook page)<\/p>\n Meet our chair, Kevin Jin<\/a>. He manages the committee by overseeing all projects, events, and meetings. #<\/span>UCSBBikeComm<\/span><\/span><\/a>#<\/span>MeetOurOfficersMonday<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n \u2013 Kevin Jin is a third year Economics and Accounting Major who raced for the UCSB Cycling Team and works for the AS Bike Shop as a bike mechanic.<\/p>\n \u2013 During his off time (rarely) he take pictures, ride his bikes, rock climbs, and fix other people\u2019s bike in exchange for food and drinks.<\/p>\n \u2013 Kevin seeks to change the campus in order to better students\u2019 lives. Being in Bike Committee, and connected with other organizations has allow him to use student\u2019s feedbacks to implement these changes.<\/p>\n Meet our vice chair, Annie Golay<\/a>. She works closely with the chair, Kevin Jin<\/a>, and the rest of the committee. #<\/span>UCSBBikeComm<\/span><\/span><\/a>#<\/span>MeetOurOfficersMonday<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n \u2013 Second year Environmental Studies major interested in pursuing environmental policy and writing.<\/p>\n \u2013 Her hobbies include running, hanging out with friends, listening to music, baking, and watching Netflix.<\/p>\n \u2013 Annie joined the Bike Committee because it is an opportunity to impact UCSB\u2019s biking culture.<\/p>\n \u2013 She is excited to work on projects that enhance and promote the use of bikes as an important form of sustainable transportation.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n<\/div>\n Tiffany Yeh<\/span><\/p>\n Meet our project manager, Tiffany Yeh<\/a>. She supervises projects so that they stay on schedule and on budget. #<\/span>UCSBBikeComm<\/span><\/span><\/a>#<\/span>MeetOurOfficersMonday<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n \u2013 Fourth year Mathematics Major with a minor in Mathematics Education and hopes to become a high school math teacher.<\/p>\n \u2013 You\u2019ll find this teacher-to-be at the local high school working with underrepresented students as a tutor and mentor.<\/p>\n \u2013 The Pacific Palisades native can often be found hiking, urban exploring, or while at UCSB, mostly watching Netflix and chilling with friends.<\/p>\n Meet one of our associate officers, Ngoc Hoang<\/a>. She assists the executive officers through volunteering to help with projects or events. #<\/span>UCSBBikeComm<\/span><\/span><\/a> #<\/span>MeetOurOfficersMonday<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n \u2013 Ngoc is a second year Pre-Biology major. She hopes to become a pediatrician in the future.<\/p>\n \u2013 She is from Walnut, CA.<\/p>\n \u2013 She is a mentor for the first generation students in Santa Catalina as well as an associate officer for the Bike Committee.<\/p>\n \u2013 Her interests include Netflix binging, eating spicy food, going on random spontaneous adventures, and spending time with family and friends.<\/p>\n \u2013 Ngoc joined the Bike Committee because she wants to be a voice for the students of UCSB and improve the lives of students here at UCSB.<\/p>\n Meet Danny Kolosta<\/a>. He is one of our associate officers for UCSB Associated Students Bike Committee<\/a>. He assists the executive officers through volunteering to help with projects or events. #<\/span>UCSBBikeComm<\/span><\/span><\/a>#<\/span>MeetOurOfficersMonday<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n \u2013 Danny is a third-year Geography major from Oakland, CA<\/p>\n \u2013 Danny enjoys biking as a recreational activity but is also interested in how biking can serve people as a mode of everyday transportation while reducing carbon emissions<\/p>\n \u2013 If not stuck in Ellison Hall working on Geographic Information Science labs, in his free time Danny enjoys hanging out in Isla Vista, playing and watching baseball, going to the Rec Cen, and eating good food<\/p>\n \u2013 Danny is especially interested in urban transportation issues, and interned with the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition and Bike East Bay over the summer assisting in advocacy and campaign efforts<\/p>\n \u2013 He hopes the experience gained from these nonprofits will translate to his work with the Bike Committee this year to make UCSB the best biking campus in the nation<\/p>\n Meet Angela Ho<\/a>. She is one of our associate officers for UCSB Associated Students Bike Committee<\/a>. She assists the executive officers through volunteering to help with projects or events. #UCSBBikeComm<\/a> #MeetOurOfficersMonday<\/a><\/p>\n \u2013 Angela Ho is a third year Financial Mathematics and Statistics major and desires to work in the field of business and finance in the future.<\/p>\n \u2013 She is from Temple City, South of Los Angeles, California.<\/span><\/p>\n \u2013 Some of her hobbies include singing, playing the piano, traveling and exploring different cities, and instagramming her adventures on social media.<\/p>\n \u2013 She decided to join the Bike Committee because she witnessed so many bike accidents during her freshman year, and she wants to help improve the campus she loves by reducing the number of accidents and promoting bicycle safety.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n <\/span> \u2014 with Angela Ho<\/a><\/span> at <\/i>UC Santa Barbara<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Meet our media coordinator, Lianna Nakashima<\/a>! She manages and maintains the committee’s website (WordPress<\/a>), Facebook<\/a>, Instagram<\/a>, Twitter<\/a>, Snapchat HQ<\/a>, and YouTube<\/a>. #<\/span>UCSB_BikeComm<\/span><\/span><\/a>#<\/span>MeetOurOfficersMonday<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n \u2013 Lianna Nakashima is is a third year Dance and Art double major with a minor Multimedia Communication.<\/p>\n \u2013 As a Los Angeles native, she explores the latest eateries, musicals, museums, and hiking spots.<\/p>\n \u2013 Lianna enjoys writing for the Daily Nexus’s Arts Week section with an emphasis on dance critiques.<\/p>\n \u2013 You may find her taking photos of food or majestic nature scenes with her Canon 5D Mark I or iPhone 5S. You probably have seen her photography around campus or social media: LXN Photography<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u2013 Hobbies include hiking, backpacking, camping, skiing, body surfing, writing, baking, cooking, and practicing yoga. \u0950<\/p>\n \u2013 Lianna has been part of Bike Committee since her freshmen year. She hopes to continue pursuing marketing as a profession.<\/p>\n Meet Navpreet Khabra<\/a>. She is one of our associate officers for UCSB Associated Students Bike Committee<\/a>. She assists the executive officers through volunteering to help with projects or events. #<\/span>UCSBBikeComm<\/span><\/span><\/a>#<\/span>MeetOurOfficersMonday<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n \u2013 Navpreet is a junior majoring in Asian American Studies and pursuing the Technology Management Program.<\/p>\n \u2013 She loves Bike Comm keeps all the bike paths at UCSB functioning and educates the campus community on bike safety.<\/p>\n \u2013 As an Associated Officer, she wants to contribute to the outreach that Bike Comm does.<\/p>\n \u2013 While at UCSB, Navpreet has worked with multiple start ups like Way Up, Crisis Text Line, and Chloe + Isabel.<\/p>\n \u2013 She has been involved in Associated Students and Residence Housing Association. She has sat on the AS Finance and Business Committee, chaired UCSB Zero Waste Committee<\/a>, and outreached for A.S. Committee on Committees – CoC<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u2013 While she is still exploring her career options, she wants to work to help underserved communities and provide more resources for those who need it.<\/p>\n \u2013 In her free time, she enjoys watching anime, spending time with people, visiting cultural sites, and taking strolls in the wonderful outdoors.<\/p>\n Meet our administrative coordinator, Jorge Sandoval Delatorre<\/a>.
