SCORE is an organization dedicated to advocating for the rights and issues of students of color and underrepresented communities at UC Santa Barbara and the broader system of higher education.\u00a0Through education and direct action, they strive to promote diversity, equality, cultural understanding, and community empowerment.<\/p>\n

SCORE Delegation to the annual Student of Color Conference at UC Irvine<\/p><\/div>\n

HOW TO UCSB<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

To get new students off to the best possible start SCORE invited them to\u00a0 join them as they discussed “struggles and changes students, specifically first- generation students, may face as they transition into the UCSB community.” All students were welcome and snacks were provided! It all happened in the Multicultural Center Theater in October.<\/p>\n

MICROAGRESSIONS OPEN MIC<\/h2>\n

SCORE provided an open mic for folks attending their general meeting to share their experiences of microagressions.<\/p>\n

STUDENT OF COLOR CONFERENCE<\/h2>\n

As in years past SCORE sent a delegation of students to this year’s Student of Color Conference. The conference was held at UC Irvine. Hosted by the University of California Student Association (UCSA) and sponsored by the AS UCSB Office of the External Vice President of Statewide Affairs, the Student of Color Conference is one of three annual conferences held by UCSA. The Student of Color Conference aims to provide an educational experience to attendees and to encourage students and staff to start the dialogue that is necessary for students to gain larger cross-cultural understanding and interaction.<\/p>\n

\n

The major goal of the conference was to create a space to discuss, dissect, and create relevant solutions to issues surrounding students of color. The Student of Color Conference is imperative to the experience of students of color within the UC system. SCORE believes that there is a crucial need to readdress history and to provide education that empowers people of color to fight for justice. They also believe in “promoting and modeling transformative and holistic community organizing amongst college students, where young people learn the history of their ancestors and their peers, develop their leadership skills, and are empowered to take charge of their education, community, and lives.”<\/p>\n

Upon the return of the delegates SCORE hosted a debriefing session in the Multicultural Center so they could share and discuss what they learned with interested students.<\/p>\n

BEN SHAPIRO AT UCSB<\/h2>\n

In light of the Finance and Business Committee with approval of the AS Senate granting $5,000 to fund anti-Black Lives Matter speaker Ben Shapiro to come speak at an event hosted by College Republicans, SCORE opened up a space to debrief and see what we could be done moving forward. A couple of senators were in attendance. Shapiro is known to incite hate and promote anti blackness. When he spoke at CSULA, BLM supporters described it as “an undercover KKK meeting. This event in general speaks volumes as to how little our lives matter\u2026”<\/p>\n

SCORE strongly objected to Shapiro being allowed to speak on campus, let alone with funding from AS. They were signatories on a letter sent to the Senate outlining their concerns. According to The Bottom Line campus newspaper, the letter outlines Shapiro’s record of \u201cespousing transphobic, homophobic, and anti-black language.\u201d Further,\u00a0\u201cHidden behind the guise of \u2018creat[ing] awareness and bringing truth to serious issues in our community,\u2019 this event is a poorly masked attempt, using the defense of free speech, to antagonize Black students and further a highly disputatious agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n

TOWN HALL AT BIKO + ALLYSHIP TRAINING<\/h2>\n

SCORE hosted a Community Town Hall in response to President Trump\u2019s travel ban at the Biko Co-op in February. The event focused on providing training for people who wish to be allies for those affected by the current immigration and travel ban of several countries in the Middle East.<\/p>\n

PALESTINE 101 WITH SCORE<\/h2>\n

SCORE devoted an evening in February and invited people to learn about the history of Israel and Palestine at the MCC.<\/p>\n

EWOCC UCSB DELEGATION<\/h2>\n

Womxn’s Commission and Score sent a delegation of students to the annual Empowering Women of Color Conference (EWOCC) at UC Berkeley.<\/p>\n

STUDY JAMS<\/h2>\n

SCORE hosted study jams each quarter to get everyone read for finals.<\/p>\n

FACING RACE<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

AS Student Commission on Racial Equality is proudly presented it’s very own conference, Facing Race: Thriving Through Adversity. In previous years, Facing Race was an opportunity to discuss global issues and how they affected students on campus. Race relations in America, however had seemed to worsen which has taken a toll on the student community’s well being. After years and years of pushing back and going to the streets in protest many SCORE members felt burnt out and hopeless. This year\u2019s conference aimed to heal and re-inspire a healthier way of taking a stand. Through art, poetry and song participants remembered not only their roots but kept them alive in a time of turmoil. The asked everyone to join them for a day of healing, nurturing and growing.<\/p>\n

TOXIC RELATIONSHIPS IN MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

SCORE’s first event of spring quarter, was\u00a0an open discussion and presentation about toxic relationships and gender violence in marginalized communities.<\/p>\n

COMBATTING ANTI-SEMITISM<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

SCORE presented an evening of education and dialogue led by UCSB grad student Hannah Kagan-Moore from Jewish Voice for Peace. The topic for the evening was the history of anti-semitism and how it is seen in our society today.<\/p>\n
