INTRODUCTION<\/h2>\n

Building on a long tradition, Program Board produced some great shows and other events this year. Sadly, as happened across the board at AS and across campus, the corona virus had a devastating effect on Program Board during spring quarter, which saw all in-person programming canceled on campus and in IV. It hit hard that students were unable to properly rock our campus as they are accustomed to doing. They even had to cancel Extravaganza! But, in the face of this adversity, they kept moving forward and successfully took their signature student-centered programing online!\u00a0Still it was all a heavy blow to everyone involved, especially graduating seniors!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

AS Program Board is a student-operated non-profit organization funded by lock-in fees which aims to coordinate fun and educational events for the UC Santa Barbara community. Appointed student board members gain hands-on experience in planning, booking, advertising, and running various events ranging from intimate open mics to 10,000 capacity festivals.<\/p>\n

Over the years Program Board has brought performers to campus who have gone on to become legendary, like five time Grammy Award winner Billie Eilish who this year won all four of the biggest awards, Song of the Year, Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best New Artist! She kicked off Program Board’s 2017 IV First Friday series!<\/p>\n

ALUMNI SHOUT OUT!<\/h2>\n

We don’t normally begin with alumni, but when we hear that a former Program Board special events coordinator won an Emmy in September 2020 we celebrate it even if it technically happened during the 20\/21 Flashback year!<\/p>\n

Associated Students congratulates Sina Sadighi! Sina, a former Special Events Coordinator from ASPB, won an Emmy this past weekend for co-producing the Dave Chappelle: Sticks & Stones Special. In 2009, Sina produced an evening Extravaganza where Ludacris headlined.<\/p>\n

SIGNATURE ANNUAL EVENTS<\/h2>\n

Program Board’s signature events include the spring quarter day long Extravaganza festival in Harder Stadium and the Delerium concert in the Thunder Dome that, in part, serves to mitigate the effects of Halloween in Isla Vista. In fact, Halloween has calmed down considerably these past few year due to UCSB student’s only alternative programming.<\/p>\n

EXTRAVAGANZA<\/h3>\n

For Program Board the biggest blow from the corona virus was the need to cancel Extravaganza its signature event and the product of months of planning. Extravaganza is always a feel good event that’s all about the fun-in the-sun culture UCSB students revel in. It’s also the climax of a year of great programs produced by Program Board for students by students!<\/p>\n

WELCOME BACK CONCERT<\/h3>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Each year Program Board begins the year with a big Gauchos only Welcome Back! to returning students and introduces itself to new students with a high voltage concert in Storke Plaza. This year’s concert featured YBN Nahmir with special guest Vincent.<\/p>\n

Birmingham, Alabama native, Nick Simmons, or better known as YBN Nahmir, first formed the hip hop collective, YBN, in 2017. The YBN crew started uploading tracks to social media platforms, popping into the scene with the release of \u201cRubbin Off the Paint.\u201d This track hit the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at number 46 in December. The track\u2019s official video has also reached over 60 million YouTube views.<\/p>\n

His most prominent records include features in songs such as Cake (Feat. Wiz Khalifa), Fuck it Up (Feat. City Girls, Tyga), New Drip (Feat. Gucci Mane), Bounce Out With That (Feat. Machine Gun Kelly), and much more!<\/p>\n

\nWoah Kenny!<\/strong> Our surprise Delirium After-Party DJ is none other than Kenny Beats<\/strong>! Hailing from Connecticut, Kenny\u2019s main influences vary from Sheryl Crow to Timbaland and Pharrell.<\/p>\n

Kenny\u2019s musical portfolio stretches far. He\u2019s picked up a thing or two from his time at the Berklee College of Music. He\u2019s produced songs and entire projects for artists such as Vince Staples, Rico Nasty (\u201cKENNNNNNY!\u201d), Dominic Fike, Ski Mask the Slump God, Gucci Mane, and more. He\u2019s got his own series on Youtube called \u201cThe Cave\u201d, where he hosts freestyle sessions with artists. TLDR; Kenny is a busy guy.<\/p>\n

ASPB has a long history of bringing great performers to the UCen Hub. This year was no different. All ASPB concerts are produced by students from deciding who to bring to publicity to technical preparations to working with artists to make sure they and students have the best possible experience! This year that extended to bringing events online during spring quarter.<\/p>\n

SPRING QUARTER<\/h3>\n

Poetry with Rick Benjamin<\/h4>\n

Spring quarter started with a poetry workshop with Rick Benjamin.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The former state poet laureate of Rhode Island, Rick Benjamin currently works at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he teaches courses in poetry & <\/span>community, ecological literature, juvenile justice, community engagement, among other things, in the departments of Comparative Literature & Environmental Studies. He has also taught at Brown University, the Rhode Island School of Design, the MFA Program in Interdisciplinary Arts at Goddard College, in many schools, and in community & <\/span>assisted living centers \u2014 where he has passed good time in the company of people who range in age from six to ninety-six. He has published three books of poetry: Passing Love<\/em> (Wolf Ridge Press: San Francisco. 2010), Floating World<\/em>(Wolf Ridge Press: 2013) and Endless Distances<\/em> (Lawrence & <\/span>Crane Publications: Houston. 2015), and a fourth book, Some Bodies in the Grief Bed<\/em>, is forthcoming from Homebound Publications (CT) in the summer of 2020. He is also currently finishing a book about both how poetry works & the work it helps us to do in our lives.<\/p>\n

Andrew Rea is one part chef, one part filmmaker, and a generous dash of irreverent YouTube personality. \u00a0Self-taught both behind and in front of the camera, his cooking show, Binging with Babish<\/a>, is enjoyed by millions of burgeoning chefs and foodies around the globe. \u00a0His passion for teaching and experimenting in the kitchen is rivaled only by his love of film and television, both of which he endeavors to share from his Brooklyn, NY kitchen.<\/p>\n

In Conversation with Eric Andre (Live)<\/h4>\n

Students joined Program Board for a conversation with Eric Andre and learned about one of the most unpredictable and unique comedians in the industry.<\/p>\n

ERIC ANDRE is the creator and host of Adult Swim\u2019s hit series THE ERIC ANDRE SHOW. Be on the lookout for Eric’s upcoming comedy, Bad Trip, which he also produced and co-wrote with Kitao Sakurai, director of Eric Andre Show.<\/p>\n

Andre’s resume is stacked- he recently lent his voice to the hyena Azizi in Disney\u2019s reimagining of The Lion King and to Luci in Netflix\u2019s Disenchantment. Previously, Andre starred on FXX\u2019s Man Seeking Woman with Jay Baruchel and ABC\u2019s Don’t Trust The B—- in APT 23. Andre can also be seen in Rough Night with Scarlett Johansson and Kate McKinnon, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping with Andy Samberg, and The Internship with Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. Andre has also just wrapped his live comedy world-tour LEGALIZE EVERYTHING.<\/p>\n

Tuesday Throwdown Featuring Nghtmre<\/h4>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Born Tyler Marenyi, NGHTMRE is known for producing intense, bass-driven dance music and DJ performances that are so intensely physical, sweat pours as he headbangs.<\/p>\n

Offfstage, he\u2019s a different man. Marenyi is super soft-spoken with a charming Southern flair. Raised in Raleigh, North Carolina, Marenyi had acquired a finance degree before deciding to make the move to LA to pursue music.<\/p>\n

It was a gamble that wound up paying off\u2014the fresh talent made his festival debut at EDC Las Vegas in 2015, and he hasn\u2019t left the circuit since. NGHTMRE goes on to play at other festivals such as Coachella in 2017, and he embarked on a US bus tour for \u201cGud Vibrations\u201d which nearly sold out.
\nWith an EP featuring Mad Decent, his songs have been repped by the likes of Skrillex and Dillon Francis. Most notably, his collaboration with SLANDER led to the launch of their own official record label in 2018.<\/p>\n

Despite the fame, Marenyi is still very much \u201caw, shucks,” with a constant self-aware smile that clings to the corners of his lips.<\/p>\n

Painting with Lil Yachty<\/h4>\n

Atlanta-born Miles Parks McCollum, better known as Lil Yachty, has been in the rap game for the past 4 years. Originally recognized for his signature red, beaded braids, Yachty only reps red tips now. With \u2018Lil Boat 3\u2019 on the way, Yachty\u2019s preparing for a new era.<\/p>\n

From livestreams with fans to his latest single, \u2018Oprah\u2019s Bank Account,\u2019 which features both Drake and Dababy, Yachty\u2019s revving up for a huge drop. Despite not releasing a new album in nearly 2 years, the rapper still racks in over 13 million monthly listeners streaming his music.<\/p>\n

With a larger-than-life personality, Yachty is recognized world-wide. From his early collaborations with Dram in \u201cBroccoli,\u201d which scored him a Grammy nomination, and Kyle in \u201ciSpy,\u201d which skyrocketed to the top of the charts, to charting singles with the Migos, Trippie Redd, Cardi B, Juice WRLD, and many other top rappers in the industry- Yachty can\u2019t seem to stop making hits.<\/p>\n

Live on the Rise: Channel Tres<\/h4>\n

Channel Tres “Black Moses\u201d EP released August 16 worldwide via Godmode, the LA label and production team behind breakout acts like Yaeji and Shamir. The title track \u201cBlack Moses\u201d premiered on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio show, and received the coveted ‘World Record’ title from the globally renowned host. For Channel, “Black Moses” is also about a complicated sense of responsibility he’s begun to feel for his family and community. The track comes reinforced with a gritty verse from rapper and former tour mate JPEGMAFIA, and psilocybe production from Godmode’s Nick Sylvester.<\/p>\n

Last summer alone, Channel toured with Childish Gambino in Australia, performed at the world’s most regarded festivals including Primavera Sound, Movement, and Splendour in the Grass, and released remixes for Mark Ronson, Toro Y Moi, Smino and August 08. He performed as part of the storied MoMA PS1 Warm Up series, then joined Toro Y Moi for an11-city fall tour across North America. As one of UCSB\u2019s most renowned alumni, the 2x Grammy-nominated producer\/DJ STEVE AOKI (born Steven Hirokyuki Aoki) is one of today\u2019s most successful American cross-genre artists, collectively counting 2.8 billion music streams on Spotify, with an additional 2 billion music streams on YouTube.<\/p>\n

Most recently, in September of 2019, Steve Aoki released his critically acclaimed memoir entitled BLUE: The Color of Noise published by St. Martin\u2019s Press. Keep an eye out for his upcoming album, the fourth in his Neon Future saga, Neon IV (Spring 2020), which has already rocketed in streaming to date and received praise from already released singles.<\/p>\n

Just one year into his time at UCSB, a 19 year old Aoki founded the trendsetting record label, events\/lifestyle company, and apparel line Dim Mak Records and Collection, which has launched the careers of global acts like The Chainsmokers, The Gossip, and The Kills, among many others. Dim Mak Records currently counts more than 1,000 official releases from the biggest acts and buzzing newcomers across EDM, indie rock, hip-hop, and beyond over its two-decades-plus discography.<\/p>\n

As the number 1 influencer and personality across social media (Piper Jaffray & Co.), Dobrik is officially the break-out star of 2019 & 2020. Known most predominantly as the leader of The Vlog Squad, Dobrik and his collaborative group frequently test trends, prank each other, and perform stunts. From appearances on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, the Today Show, Live with Kelly & Ryan, Good Morning America, GQ, Wall Street Journal and many others to his budding acting career (Axel in Angry Birds 2), Dobrik has elevated himself into international stardom.<\/p>\n

Dobrik starred alongside co-judges Ciara and Debbie Gibson, in Nickelodeon’s series, America’s Most Musical Family in 2019, hosted the Teen Choice Awards and presented at the American Music Awards. Ask Ari Aster<\/h4>\n

Ari Aster (writer and director of critically acclaimed films, MIDSOMMAR & HEREDITARY) leads the new age of horror films. His multilayered and deeply personal work has landed him on the radars of film lovers, critics, and directors such as Bong Joon Ho (Parasite). In MIDSOMMAR, Ari features an extraordinary cast composed of Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, and Will Poulter. Midsommar released last summer and instantly became a critical and commercial success. Five Years of Delirium: How Program Board Works Behind the Scenes<\/div>\n

UC Santa Barbara students associate Delirium, the annual Halloween concert put on by Associated Students Program Board, with Halloween weekend so often that it can be easy to forget that the concert was only started five years ago.<\/p>\n

In the aftermath of the 2013-2014 academic year, which Dean of Student Life Katya Armistead described as \u201cturbulent and difficult,\u201d Armistead said she knew that the culture around Halloween needed to change \u2014 so she called on student leaders to come together and brainstorm.<\/p>\n

Police presence this year is expected to be the same as previous years; students can expect metal detectors and pat-downs outside of the Thunderdome. Siavash Ghadiri \/ Daily Nexus<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Out of these discussions came the idea for a big Halloween concert, which Armistead said was completely student-run. Beyond providing security, portable toilets and parking, the university has no role in putting together the event; instead, members of the Associated Students Program Board (ASPB) spend months gathering booking data about artists, reaching out to their agents and narrowing down the list of potential performers.<\/p>\n

Nathaly Pacheco, special events coordinator for ASPB, fields requests from students and other board members about the genres of music or artists they want to see perform at the annual event.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to make sure we cater to what you guys want,\u201d Pacheco said, emphasizing that events are funded by student fees.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith board as a whole, no matter what we do, we have to think students are our number one priority.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the past week, Pacheco and the rest of the ASPB staff have been working to ensure the show runs smoothly. On Saturday, Pacheco and the production coordinator will be starting their day at 7 a.m. to oversee the set up of all the production equipment, like the audio, lighting and any special equipment Program Board ordered at the artist\u2019s request. They won\u2019t go home until 2 a.m., when they wrap up clean-up for the show.<\/p>\n

Pacheco, who is going into her third year on Program Board, said her experience on the board in previous years has helped her work with other members more cohesively.<\/p>\n

\u201cI truly feel like you can\u2019t be a good leader unless you know what the other people that are working for you are doing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

For this year\u2019s show, and her time on Program Board as a whole, Pacheco said it was important to her to bring a diverse lineup to campus; she pointed out that UCSB has never had a female headliner perform at any of their shows.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a big problem, even within the industry; it\u2019s like such an issue of seeing powerful women or seeing women being represented in this specific industry,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Pacheco said Program Board was actually in touch with Megan Thee Stallion to bring her for Delirium but said the timing didn\u2019t work out.<\/p>\n

With Leikeli47, one of the supporting acts at this year\u2019s Delirium, Pacheco said the board tries its best to \u201cbring and showcase diversity when it comes to the artists that we bring to the campus and stay on the wave of artists that we think are only going to keep growing and growing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI really, really want to make sure that we do that this year,\u201d she said. \u201cI know that we have a really big Latinx community here at this school \u2014 it\u2019s the second biggest demographic \u2014 but we don\u2019t cater to Spanish music or other different genres of music.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kiyomi Morrison, program board commissioner, emphasized Pacheco\u2019s sentiments about wanting to invite more student input to Program Board\u2019s internal processes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d like [students] to meet the Program Board people, and then also make our office hours available so they can come in at any time, talk to anyone, not only for talking about the programs that we do, but if they need help doing events or if they are interested in working or volunteering with us,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Morrison pointed to the Associated Students\u2019 Finance and Business Committee\u2019s public posts last year that documented where student fees were going and said that was something she was interested in implementing, particularly because Program Board has a high lock-in fee, she added.<\/p>\n

Program Board is working with a budget of $1,110,106.25 for the 2019-2020 academic year, according to a budget presented by last year\u2019s commissioner, Ryanne Ross, at the end of last year. While a lot of the budget goes toward the larger special events, Program Board also puts on regular Free Tuesday Films, Storke Tower shows, shows in the Hub, lectures and other events throughout the year.<\/p>\n

All the money that Program Board makes from charging for smaller events goes toward subsidizing costs for larger events, Morrison added.<\/p>\n

When it comes to events like Delirium, Morrison and Pacheco said the safety of students is of the utmost priority to them.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe throw a lot of big festivals where a lot of people are drunk and that kind of stuff, and also, police are required to be there,\u201d Morrison said. \u201cWe\u2019re on the student side \u2026 we are here for you guys and we want to make sure you are safe, first and foremost.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pacheco said police presence at this year\u2019s show is expected to be the same as previous years, and that students can expect metal detectors and pat-downs outside of the Thunderdome.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know that Halloween here is pretty dead, and it\u2019s just like, people go home, people decide to go to other places,\u201d Pacheco said. \u201cThis is one of the things that people can do in a fun and safe way.\u201d<\/p>\n
