The A.S. Commission on Student Well Being is a small but mighty group of students dedicated to promoting the physical and mental well being of the UCSB community. Since forming in 2008 the Commission has broadened the scope of its initiatives and this year produced a variety of activities to engage students and encourage lifelong healthy habits.

Free Fitness Tuesdays

Free Fitness Tuesday Workout

Since everyone has different preferences, COSWB’s Free Fitness Tuesdays are designed to provide variety and give people a taste of activities including Yoga, Cardio Hip-Hop, Zumba, hypnotherapy, and Brazilian dance. These are fun classes taught by local instructors. Each in its way represents a community, which in many cases is international in scope.

Mental Health Anti-Stigma Campaign

Anti-Stigma Campaign

To address students’ mental health COSWB hosted meditation sessions that met twice each week in selected dorms. They also hosted the week long “Anti-Stigma Campaign 2012,” because often students are unwilling to admit that that they need mental health counseling and therefore don’t tell their friends or make use of the many resources available on campus.

The theme of the campaign was “I Love Someone With . T-shirts were made on which people could fill in the blank. The campaign also included informational tabling in Isla Vista and on campus, a “Break Yo Stigma” workshop presented in partnership with the Mental Health Peer Interns, the screening of the film A Beautiful Mind, and a Mental Health Mocktail Mixer with the Mental Health Peers, Active Minds, and Matt Santana from Counseling Services that provided a relaxed setting to meet and socialize with people who have experienced mental illness in their lives.

Tabling in the Arbor

COSWB also tabled in the Arbor during fall quarter to provide students with information and resources to promote wellness and helped fund the free massage wellness centers during UStudy Center hosted by the UCen during dead and finals weeks.
