The Student Initiated Outreach and Retention Committee had a productive year outreaching to local high schools and working to mentor current students. It began with a well attended retreat to map out the upcoming year.
At San Marcos High School UCSB students assisted students with their homework and advised them on how best to prepare for and apply for college.
SIRRC also hosted a movie night for high school students and gave students from 4 different schools tours of the campus. The tours included a student panel where the K-12 students were allowed to ask other students about their experiences in higher education.
Students hosted a midterm and finals Study Jams where about 70 students were in attendance as well as study skills workshops.
As part of retention efforts, the committee worked on workshops for CSB students regarding resources available to them as students.
The books in the A.S. SIRRC Book Bank were all catalogued, labeled, and scanned onto SIRRC’s online system and work was done on the protocol for the system.
SIRRC Chair Ivan Lamas-Sanchez contacted other SIRRC chairs and committees in the UC system to share information and ideas.
Here are some more photos from the retreat!
