Introduction
In its second year of operation, the Human Rights Board was active on a variety of fronts as part of members’ efforts to educate the public about the range of human rights issues locally, nationally, and internationally. The larger aim is to encourage people to take action themselves to address these issues.
Peace in the Park Rally
In fall quarter the board enlisted students faculty, community members for a “Peace In the Park demonstration in Isla Vista’s People’s Park.
The rally featured musical performances, including one from UCSB’s all-female a cappella vocal group Vocal Motion, local artwork, and teach-ins with Global and International Studies professor Paul Amar and Department of Asian American Studies professor Diane Fujino, who discussed topics including student protests and UC tuition increases. Several workshops covered a variety of human rights topics, such as “Feminism in the Work Place,” “The Corporatization of Isla Vista,” “History of Black Activism at UCSB” and “The Crisis in the Horn of Africa.”
Guatanamo Bay Protest
Board members also directed attention to protests in Washington, DC that marked the 10th anniversary of the opening of the detention center at Guantanamo Bay.
