The Associated Students Commission on Student Well Being (COSWB) is committed to the general well being of UCSB undergraduates, with a particular emphasis on mental well being. Its purpose is to increase awareness, educate, advocate, and serve as a reference point for student social services. COSWB also creates programs that provide a positive and comfortable environment for everyone on campus. They have co-sponsored events with Health & Wellness Program peer interns and the Counseling Service’s Stress Management Peers.
GAME TRUCK
During Spring Quarter COSWB brought a video game truck to campus. The game truck was a place to relax in the run up to finals. It provided a variety of interactive games both inside and outside.
LECTURE: “CONQUER YOUR CRITICAL INNER VOICE”
In response to concerns about the national youth suicide rate, COSWB sponsored a lecture on suicide prevention by psychologist Lisa Firestone entitled “Conquer Your Critical Inner Voice.”
As reported in the Daily Nexus, “Firestone, a violence and suicide expert and director of research and education at the Glendon Association — a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating and training people about mental health — said students often underestimate the pivotal relationship between a person’s critical inner voice and suicide.”
“The critical inner voice plays a part in influencing and directing our behavior in a lot of ways,” Firestone said. “That makes us less productive and take less chances and be less invested in things.”
She advised students to monitor the critical inner voice and not listen to it when necessary.
