Technology Services Committee

Text by Dmitriy Gekker, A.S. Technology Committee Chair

This year was a fantastic year for the A.S. Technology Committee. Being the chair, I had my doubts about what I could and could not accomplish but I feel that we did better than I could ever have dreamed of.

We put on 3 three consecutive and amazing LAN (Local Access Network) parties.  LAN parties are 12-hour video gaming fests that took place in the Loma Pelona conference room. Anyone is invited and all they need to bring is a computer and monitor or console and TV.

To advertise for this event we cooperated with the Media Relations Committee to make some outstanding posters for the winter and spring events.

By the time of the spring quarter LAN, we had over 100 people show up! Foreseeing this expansion we had purchased 2 extra 24 port gigabit switches, all of which we used for the spring gathering.

This year AS Tech didn’t just focus on the LAN though, we really branched out. One of our most successful projects was the computer building workshop. There we were able to show people how to build a computer from scratch, allowing anyone to potentially save hundreds of dollars on their next purchase, as well as have a lot of fun with electronics.

We also set up different security seminars about the possibility of remote wireless hacking and an Android phone seminar detailing how to make the most of your Android phone.
