ISLA VISTA COMMUNITY RELATIONS COMMITTEE
INTRODUCTION
As its name suggests, the Isla Vista Community Relations Committee (IVCRC) works with the local community on events and other initiatives that bring together students and the larger Isla Vista community in community building efforts. When students are directly involved with planning events like Pardall Carnival and Chilla Vista that bookend the academic year, the good vibrations are palpable and family friendly. IVCRC also works to identify community needs and partners with other AS groups to improve the quality of life in IV for all residents.
PARDALL CARNIVAL
IVCRC working with the Community Affairs Board began the school year with its now traditional Pardall Carnival, a multi-block bash right on main street Isla Vista. And everyone was invited!
The well attended annual carnival is the funnest possible way to let students, families, and the community in general know about all the great things students do through AS and beyond.
Student and community organizations were invited to set up tables and games to provide information and challenges that brought out the kid in everyone!
Groups that tabled included:
Program Board
The Bottom Line
Recycling
Environmental Affairs Board
Community Affairs Board
Take Back the Night
Teach for America
Promise for Education
There were carnival attractions ranging from a dunk tank
There were also plenty of henna tattoos, a caricaturist, and face painters galore.
Music was provided by DJ ??? spinning on the balcony of the Isla Vista Tenants Union.
The weather was perfect and the carnival was the perfect way to kick off the year!
CHILLA VISTA
At the other end of the year IVCRC, CAB and Program Board presented the annual Chilla Vista festival. This year’s festival was held in Perfect Park and was an ideal compliment to the Pardall Carnival. The festival featured a host of great local bands, including headliner FMYLYBND, That’s What She Said, Alright Alright, The Olés, and The Fire Department. A variety of organizations provided information, activities, and even free food form the IV Coop! At the end of the day, a good time was had by all and Chilla Vista once again was a great showcase for the chill vibe of a typical AS student produced event!
