KCSB FM 91.9 – FLASHBACK 2013-2014

KCSB FM 91.9

INTRODUCTION

Radio with a Pulse,” KCSB-FM’s tagline for the 2013-14 academic year, has truly summed up Santa Barbara’s only non-commercial community radio station. KCSB’s team of 100+ volunteer programmers (and others) bring heart, passion, and a rare commitment to public-service broadcasting, producing creative, socially-conscious work that reflects matters of regional and global interest, while also promoting local arts, music, recreation, non-profit initiatives, and education.

KCSB Recruitment 2014

THIS YEAR AT KCSB

During the past twelve months, KCSB has:

• Presented a live broadcast & vinyl-release party with local band Dante Elephante heralding the debut of KCSB’s new label, Bank Burner Records.

• Conducted its annual Fund Drive, raising $25,500+ (6% more than the previous year’s returns);

• Co-presented & aired live a lecture by Prof. Noam Chomsky, & also screened a new Chomsky documentary;

• Hosted Holy Ghost! at Velvet Jones, Terakaft at UCSB’s MCC, The Wes Anderson Collection book tour, and more;

• Broadcast news stories of local interest, such as KCSB’s own regular UC Regents beat, plus live airing of the KCSB sponsored Radio Town-Hall that took place in Storke Plaza in response to the Deltopia riot in Isla Vista’s; the candlelight vigil after May’s tragic violence, and UCSB’s “Day of Mourning & Reflection” service, along with other nuanced coverage and on-air responses to the violence and its aftermath.

• Hosted the UC Radio Network (UCRN) conference, which brought representatives from college-radio stations from the University of California and the state college systems to the UCSB campus for a weekend of lectures and workshops.

24/7/365, KCSB airs an array of diverse, engaging, and informative radio programs, sharing works by emerging (and local) artists and thinkers, while also educating listeners about more familiar luminaries. Students, community volunteers and staff work around the clock to improve the station’s broadcast and other media presentations. In addition, as part of its core educational mission, KCSB provides free training for its volunteer talent ranging from show production, including live-remote broadcasts and in-studio performances; to the technical skills need to keep a 24/7 station on the air. All of this activity has earned KCSB significant recognition both locally and nationally.

Ahead of the coming school year, we find ourselves discussing the need for an even greater commitment to community building and renewal. We invite your own suggestions for the future, and also request your material support of our mission! As we receive no funding from the University, your donations help to sustain and to improve KCSB-FM’s facilities (such as recent ergonomically-minded renovations and stabilization of our mountaintop-transmitter power supply), public events, and overall service. During our next fund drive (Nov. 12-21, 2014), we will again offer certificates, event tickets, music, books, media, and more as thank-you gifts for our donors. (Looking for new ways to increase awareness and excitement, we would also like to speak with you about participating in a proposed membership-discount program.)
