IVCRC-Year in Review (Submitted by Rhandy Siordia)
Pardall Carnival, September 2010
This year IVCRC hosted our second annual Pardall Carnival on Pardall Rd. in Isla Vista. The street was shut down to automobile traffic and all community members were invited out for some fun in the sun in an event that included carnival games, a Ferris wheel, and free samples from local eateries. Over 30 different student groups were involved, whether they were distributing information about their organization or hosting a carnival game. The Carnival yearly brings students and IV families together in an exciting yet relaxing atmosphere!
Burglary Campaign, March-April 2011
In response to the high burglary and theft rates that have recently affected Isla Vista residents, IVCRC has collaborated with Isla Vista Foot Patrol, local business owners, and five other campus organizations to raise burglary awareness. Stickers depicting an anti-burglary logo were mass-printed and distributed to local shops and businesses for placement on things like cups, bags, and boxes that are given to customers. The goal of this campaign is to make more Isla Vista residents aware of the burglary and theft problems affecting our community, so that together we can put a stop to this ongoing problem.
Isla Vista Calendar, January 2011
Every fall quarter, IVCRC initiates a contest open to all UCSB students encouraging them to submit their favorite photos of IV. Our Committee then selects an array of photos that we feel provide a good representation of Isla Vista culture, and compile them into a calendar. Calendars are distributed to UCSB students, and give community members an opportunity to collectively appreciate the beauty and culture of our unique beachside location.
Chilla Vista, May 2011
Chilla Vista is an annual event coordinated by both IVCRC and the Associated Students Office of the External Vice President, Local Affairs. This event takes the form of a “chill”, laidback day in an IV park, and features local bands performing throughout the day followed by a well-known headliner. On the day of the event, community members are encouraged to take in the unique culture of Isla Vista, as well as add to that culture through various forms of artistic expression. Chilla Vista gives locals a chance to meet one another and build community, as well as showcase Isla Vista culture through creativity, discovery, and kinship. The event also emphasizes sustainability and the necessity for our community to respect the Earth and keep Isla Vista the beautiful place that it is.
Funding
Over the course of our fiscal year, the Isla Vista Community Relations Committee grants funding to a variety of different campus, student, and Isla Vista-based organizations. Our mission is to strengthen the community of Isla Vista by enabling these organizations to carry out projects and events that encourage a culture of inclusion. IVCRC frequently works alongside these different groups to create, develop, and implement new ideas based on common initiatives.
