ADVOCACY
Advocacy has a long history in Associated Students. Students have identified issues ranging from the local to the international and proactively worked to address these issues by establishing standing boards, committees, and commissions.

ENVIRONMENT
A.S. environmental groups provide a variety of services to the campus community. They also work to mitigate the University’s impact on the environment by encouraging sustainable, carbon neutral, and eco-friendly practices both on-campus and in our surrounding communities. This student engagement includes educational programs; funding research and capital improvement projects; and funding both beach clean-up and Adopt-a-Block programs.
VOLUNTEER PLACEMENT
MEDIA/NEWS
Student radio KCSB is the oldest radio FM station in the entire UC system. A.S. has also supported several newspapers during its history. All of these efforts are part of a desire by students to make alternative voices heard whether these be on the air as music, public affairs, and news broadcasts or in print providing an alternative to both the commercial and on-campus press. In addition, the Media Relations Committee was established to let the public know about A.S. initiatives and events.
EVENTS & OUTREACH
Since its inception, A.S. Program Board has been popular with students, because it’s programming is by and for students. The External Vice President for Local Affairs Office and several A.S. boards, committees, and commissions work hard to engage the local Isla Vista community with events and partner with the University to provide alternative programming to the IV party scene. A.S. also works with both the University and Santa Barbara County to mitigate the effects of the world renowned but unsponsored annual IV Halloween celebration. The recently formed Rally Committee supports Gaucho athletics and encourages pride in everything Gaucho!

ADMINISTRATIVE & FINANCIAL
A.S. is a complex organization. The administrative and financial groups in A.S. provide students with valuable “real world” skills such as crafting initiatives, writing by-laws, negotiation, staffing, accounting, and entrepreneurship.

TECHNOLOGY
Computer technology underpins everything we do at A.S. It is also increasingly a recreational outlet. The Technology Serivces Committee was created in response to these developments and engages students across campus in events that are educational, intellectually challenging, and fun.
LEGAL RESOURCES
A.S. has been providing free legal services to students for over 40 years. These services were created because students face unique legal challenges both on and off campus. By providing consulting services, workshops, and other support these services help students navigate or better yet avoid legal conflicts they might face.
