WOMYN’S COMMISSION
INTRODUCTION
The UCSB A.S. Womyn’s Commission is an educator and an advocate for womyn’s rights, with a commitment to representing and improving the status of womyn on campus and in the community. The A.S. Womyn’s Commission is working toward becoming a diverse group of members reflecting the different voices of the campus and community.
ACTIVITIES
Womyn’s Commission participated in an event hosted by the UCSB Women’s Center called UCSB SMASH: A Love Your Body Event. During the event members of the center destroyed weight scales to draw attention to unhealthy body images and standards.
Womyn’s Commission, UCSB Health and Wellness, and Tri Delta Sorority participated by setting up tables to distribute information about healthy lifestyle choices. Womyn’s Commission hosted a panel featuring a nutrition specialist, a fitness professional, a healthy eating advisor, and a psychologist.
HERSTORY
Herstory is a student-produced magazine for art, poetry, fiction and memoirs submitted by UCSB students and community members. The guiding light behind the publication is a combination of themes the editors developed with their sister group, A.S. Womyn’s Commission, as well as the community-at-large. The themes they draw from include change, strength, unity and power.
Aside from Herstory being an expressive place for individuals to voice their uncensored perspectives, from global to local to personal to physical to institutional, the editors also strive to address some of the heavier issues facing women today.
