BIKE COMMITTEE

INTRODUCTION

The AS Bike Committee is a unique component of the Associated Students community. The ASBC is a place where passionate advocacy for bicycle safety and a clear voice for consideration of bicycles in campus planning have come together.

The ASBC is an active bicycle system advocate, and works to increase student, staff, faculty, and administration awareness of and involvement with bicycle system issues in and around UCSB. The committee also funds bike improvements on campus, and participates in social and outreach events throughout the year.

CURRENT INITIATIVES

SASSB Intersection

Preliminary ideas have been made to move the dangerous SAASB intersection. These ideas include expanding the intersection and turning it into a roundabout. Currently a landscaping consultant is working on the problem. This project will cost upwards of $200,000 and will take at least a couple years to complete.

Arts Parking Lot

This parking lot is known for its over capacity issues. The Committee aims to address this issue by providing peak racks. Funding is pending approval. The goal is to complete this by spring break 2014.

MOST RECENTLY COMPLETED PROJECTS

HSSB Intersection

The Pardall pathway leading in to campus now has an added intersection in front of HSSB. This newly added intersection has helped traffic flow thus increasing safety on the pathway. It has also enhanced the aesthetics of the area, preventing bikers from feeling obligated to bike through the grass in order to reach their destination.

Path Between Isla Vista & Campus

The bike path in between Isla Vista and campus was recently repainted and repaved, with a new slurry coat added as well. The repaving has made the path smoother, making traffic flow in a steady and direct manner.

Campbell Hall Numbering

The vast lot catering to the students who frequent Campbell hall was recently numbered, enabling students to locate their bikes easily before and after class. The newly numbered lot was completed in February 2014.
