GOVERNMENT
UCSB’s student government represents student interests. These interests range from the local to the international. On-campus student Executive Officers, Senate members, and the Student Advocate General, work with campus officials on a variety of issues. They also work with local residents, government agencies, and the business community. On the national and international fronts they address issues ranging from human rights to environmental concerns. In all cases they are guided by a spirit of collaboration, but when necessary are willing to confront issues head on. They bring a wide variety of experiences to the table and do their homework, so that they can take informed stands and initiate meaningful change.
Student government at UCSB is comprised of an Executive Board and a Senate. The Executive Board includes several officers. The A.S. President is the chief executive officer. The Internal Vice President presides over Senate meetings, works with the Committee on Committees to staff the various A.S. Boards, Committees, and Commissions, and in general makes sure that A.S. runs smoothly internally. The Executive Vice President, Local Affairs works with the local community, including local government officials. The Executive Vice President, Statewide Affairs is responsible for statewide and national initiatives. This includes attending UC Regents meetings and working with state government officials. The Student Advocate General provides legal counsel when there is a conflict between a student and the University.
Each of the Executive Officers and the Senators are elected during campus-wide elections which take place each April. In recent years there have been two parties. The campaign, which includes several candidate forums held in the HUB, is limited to two weeks each year. Click here for photos of the forums and here for election night photos.
