Creative Media Unit (CMU)

INTRODUCTION

The AS Creative Media Unit (CMU) works with AS entities to provide information and publicity about programs, events, and services that serve the campus and larger communities.

The AS Creative Media Unit includes a marketing team, graphic designers, a web developer, videographers, photographers, and the UCSB TV production team. It also supports the AS Media Center that provides camera equipment, a studio space, post-production software, media workshops, and meeting space available to all UCSB students at no cost.

Sticker Packs

The Mapache (raccoon) and Storkie (Storke Tower) sticker packs created by the CMU student graphic design team were an instant hit when they debuted and continue to be much loved by students and the UCSB community as new stickers are constantly being added. The now over 30 i Message stickers are the perfect way to express students’ deep Gaucho/Mapache feelings. Honestly, which of us hasn’t felt like a tearful Storke Tower at one point? Or a mapache hitting the snooze button? There are also seasonal collections and ones that celebrate other milestone in Gaucho life. When the coronavirus sent everyone home, CMU created Virtual Backgrounds for students’ Zoom experience. The stickers are without a doubt  one of the most recognized of the many CMU publicity initiatives.

Social Media

CMU also promotes AS on social media using Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. AS Art Director Chelsea Lyon works with students to create content including graphic design, video, and photography in an ongoing effort to let everyone know about the many ways AS serves the campus and local communities. Admittedly, this is challenging and CMU hasn’t yet found a way to significantly extend their reach online. In part, this is because creating content in collaboration with AS’s many entities isn’t always seamless. These challenges are not unique to AS, since effective social media campaigns always require a significant and continual investment of time.

In an effort to increase AS and CMU visibility, CMU did sponsor several online drawings with prizes to engage students.
