INTRODUCTION
“The Associated Students Commission on Student Well Being (COSWB) is committed to the general well being of UCSB undergraduates, with a particular emphasis on mental well being. Its purpose is to increase awareness, educate, advocate, and serve as a reference point for student social services. COSWB creates programs that provide a positive and comfortable environment for everyone on campus in order to stay true to our values of appreciating and preserving student well being. Some events we host include, but are not limited to Yoga, Free Fitness Tuesdays, self-defense classes, food demos, movie screenings, and guest lectures.”
This what COSWB does and here’s what they did this past year:
EVENTS THAT COSWB HOSTED OR PARTICIPATED IN
Pardall Carnival
COWSB was out to let people know about well-being at AS’s annual beginning-of-year meet and great with IV. The event was produced by IVCRC and CAB and got the year off to a great start!
Free Fitness Tuesdays with Blenders Smoothie
Participants were offered a variety of workouts, so students could chose what best suits their personal style.
Food Demo with IV Food Co-op/Make Your Own Acai Bowl
COSWB partnered with the IV Food Co-0p to demonstrate healthy food alternatives.
Folks that stopped by the IV Food Coop got a COSWB how-to for healthy eating featuring acai berry the super food from Brazil! According to Julie Thomson writing in Huffpost Taste, “Acai bowls look like ice cream, almost taste like ice cream, and make you feel good about your breakfast choice.” COSWB wants everyone to start the day out right!
Free Yoga Thursdays
Students de-stressed and strengthened with free yoga classes in the Grad Student Lounge.
Finals Study Jam With Blenders Smoothies and Goodie Bags
Finals are stressful. COSWB did its part to make sure students had a place to study and healthy treats to get them through.
Take a Flower Tabling Event
If flowers are nature’s smiles, then COSWB brought a whole tabletop of smiles to give folks at this tabling event in The Arbor.
Krav Maga Series
Participants learned how to prepare themselves in dangerous situations and how to react to best protect themselves with the help of SB Krav Maga professionals. It was a great opportunity to learn some valuable skills, and get a great workout session. No experience was necessary! The workshop was designed for anyone new to learning about self-defense and those looking to brush up their skills.
Stigma Free UCSB
COSWB participated in this campus-wide campaign to take the stigma out of mental illness, so that students are encouraged to get help when they need it!
