INTRODUCTION

The Environmental Affairs Board (EAB) is a branch of UCSB’s Associated Students Government and is the largest and most active environmental group on campus. The charge of EAB is to protect, preserve and enhance the environment, principally at UCSB and its surrounding communities. The board focuses on ecology, energy, food, climate change, water policy and conservation, the economy, environmental justice and other issues. It coordinates and coalition-builds with other groups to promote environmental perspectives and sustainability throughout the University and its surrounding communities, as well as at the state, national, and global levels.

PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES

Adopt-a-Blocks

EAB members regularly picked up trash in IV. Armed with their signature high-fashion tangerine colored grapplers they scavenged high and low for the many oddities and just plain trash left by the careless in the streets and parks of IV.

Habitat Restoration

As in past years, EAB partnered with the Cheadle Center for Biodiversity & Ecological Restoration (CCBER) to work on local restoration projects including trips out to the Channel Islands.  This work benefits both the environment and students who learn about the local ecology.

Beach Clean-Ups

EAB teamed with other campus organizations to coordinate two massive beach clean-ups per quarter to keep Del Playa Beach clean and safe. It’s both brilliant and a bit sad that they picked up over 250 pounds of trash in just a few hours.

Hiking

What better way to get to know the surrounding environment than to actually explore it? EAB member hiked every weekend to do just that.

Farmers Market Bike Rides

In support of local farmers EAB members rode down to the Camino Real Marketplace Farmers Market each week to shop for their fresh fruit and produce.

Yoga

To reduce stress EAB members got together for a bit of yoga!

Do-It-Yourself-Workshops

EAB hosted a variety of DIY workshops ranging from creating lotions to making their own silverware.

Let’s Go Camping

EAB led an awesome camping trip each quarter. Trips have included El Capitan State Beach and the San Rafael Wilderness.
