ATTORNEY GENERAL

INTRODUCTION

The Attorney General acts as the investigator and prosecutor in cases she/he brings before Judicial Council that allege violations of the A.S. Constitution & By-laws. The Attorney General may also serve as an advisor to students who wish to bring a case themselves.

ATTORNEY GENERAL RESIGNATION

Attorney General Hector Contreras announced his resignation during the last Senate meeting of winter quarter. He explained his decision to resign in the Daily Nexus:

“Today will be my final Senate meeting,” Contreras said [at the time]. “I sent in my letter of resignation a couple of weeks ago to both [A.S. Internal Vice President] Kimia [Hashemian] and [A.S. President] Jimmy Villarreal. I’ve been in A.S. for two and a half years and the dynamics have certainly changed a lot.”

AS ELECTION BRIBERY CHARGES

Newly-appointed A.S. Attorney General Brandon Lee announced during his first president’s cabinet report that he would be launching an investigation into incentives offered by the Inter Fraternity Council (IFC) to encourage their members to vote in the AS and campus-wide elections. This investigation was the result of the Elections Board calling into question the legitimacy of the recently concluded AS election. The IFC was eventually exonerated and the election was certified by Chancellor Yang, but only after AS and UCSB Audit & Advisory Services conducted thorough investigations.
