NEW STAFF
LaDonte King is AS’s new Assistant Director for Government Affairs. This is a critical position in AS and we’re glad to have LaDonte onboard. He has taken the position in new directions with a strong focus on students making sure that they keep their GPAs up while serving the campus in AS. He also stepped into a number of key advisory positions to help AS student groups move forward through the year.
Jessie Schmidt joined AS last summer as Recycling and Compost Program Coordinator. The position requires Jessie to both coordinate a crew of dedicated students and network across campus to raise public awareness of recycling and sustainability. Welcome aboard Jessie!
KCSB News has a new Director. Lisa Osborne brings a wealth of experience in broadcast journalism to the KCSB newsroom. This experience is invaluable for students as they report daily news, sports, and in general keep our community up to date and well informed.
STAFF TRANSITIONS
Assistant Director for Business Services Ed Schatz has taken on a new role in AS as Director of Technical Assistance and Internal Operations. This new position in AS will provide our organization with support in key areas of its mission.
Long time KCSB Development Coordinator Ted Coe has been promoted to KCSB Advisor. In this role he will be working closely with students on the day to day running of the station. Considering the fact that KCSB is a community of over 125 volunteers this is a huge task. With his long experience at KCSB and deep understanding of popular culture Ted is ideal for this position.
Assistant Director for Independent Media Marta Ulvaeus moved on after serving KCSB and AS for 3 years after the departure of longtime KCSB Director Elizabeth Robinson. Marta’s enthusiasm for KCSB and community radio in general was infectious and during her tenure KCSB continued to serve our community by providing alternative voices, a wide array of music choices, exclusive reporting of UCSB sports, and community events. In her last year, she also led the KCSB fund drive as Ted Coe took on the role of KCSB Advisor.
Toward the end of the year Legal Code & Legal Resource Center Caseworker Corydon “Cory” Graves left AS to become Deputy District Attorney for Santa Barbara County. Her work here was challenging on all fronts, since she also had duties as AS Student Government Liaison before LaDonte King was hired. We wish her well in her future endeavors.
Living History Project Coordinator Mahader Tesfai left AS during winter quarter. His online Living History Project provides a comprehensive overview of UCSB student activism and accomplishments dating back to the 1950s. He also advised numerous AS entities, including Student Initiated Outreach and Retention Committee (SIRRC).
NEW AS ELECTIONS SYSTEM
A new Single Transferable Vote (STV) voting system was implemented by the Elections Committee for the 2016 AS election. Unanimously passed by the Senate, the system seeks to ensure a more proportional election through the ranking of candidate choices. The AS Election Committee and AS staff spent many hours testing the system before the election. To everyone’s relief, it worked flawlessly.
AS ELECTION CHALLENGE
Although the STV system was rolled out without a hitch, in an unprecedented action, the Elections Board issued a statement that called for redoing the entire election. The statement was the result of actions taken by the President of the Inter Fraternity Council (IFC). For full details click here for the Elections Committee page on Flashback.
