Commission on Student Well Being (COSWB)

INTRODUCTION

The Associated Students Commission on Student Well Being (COSWB) is committed to the general well being of UCSB undergraduates, with a particular emphasis on physical, nutritional, and mental well-being. Its purpose is to increase awareness, educate, advocate, and serve as a reference point for student social services. COSWB creates programs that provide a positive and comfortable environment for everyone on campus in order to stay true to our values of appreciating and preserving student well being. Some events COSWB host include, but are not limited to yoga, Free Fitness Tuesdays, self-defense classes, meditation workshops, and paint nights.

FREE COSWB WORKSHOPS

COSWB hosted a variety of workshops each quarter to promote physical and mental wellbeing.

Krav Maga Self-Defense

Taught by Pedro E. Sanchez, Krav Maga is a military self-defense and fighting system developed  for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Israel security forces (Shin Bet and Mossad). It combines a number of fighting styles and marshal arts.

The workshops are designed to provide students the skills necessary to defend themselves and promote self-confidence.

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)With Free Blenders Smoothies

High intensity interval training (HIIT) is a type of interval training in which participants alternate short, very high intensity intervals with longer, slower intervals to recover. Especially with the help of students’ FAVORITE fitness instructor, Rhian Jacques, participants quickly burned calories as they flowed through a variety of exercises to sculpt and tone their bodies into shape! The HIIT workout targets core, upper body, and lower body through both cardio and high intensity exercises. Examples of exercises include: squats, push-ups, sit-ups/ab work-outs, plank, mountain climbers, tricep dips, and burpees.

The High Intensity Training is for all levels. No previous experience needed, so students were encouraged to just come ready for a great and fun work out!

And guess what? Everybody got a FREE Blenders smoothie at the end of their work out!

Yoga Series

With the guidance of instructor Stephanie students  explored a variety of practices that improved their strength, coordination, balance, endurance, and flexibility. They released stress, calm their minds, developed their ability to concentrate, and emerged refreshed and renewed. The course was FREE for all students, and snacks/drinks were provided.

EVENTS HOSTED BY COSWB

Every quarter COSWB hosts a variety of different events that promote students’ physical, mental, and nutritional health. Here are some examples of events we host!

COSWB Carnival

At our COSWB Carnival we hand out a bunch of nutritious health bars and Yerba Mate energy drinks for students. We also have t-shirt tie dyeing to provide a fun outlet to help students destress. Last but certainly not least we have a giant jumper for students to bounce around in and have fun.

Flowers with Compliments

During our proclaimed “Dead Week” (the week before finals) COSWB goes to the arbor right in front of the library and hands out flowers with compliments to lighten the somber atmosphere and spread some cheer!

Make Your Own Acai Bowl

In order to promote nutritional health COSWB hosts different “food demonstrations” to educate students while also providing the actual food as well!
